Still plugging away? I've been so wrapped up in events around home and reading books for review that I've fallen way behind on most of my challenges. I got lucky tonight and happened to catch the movie adaptation of William Styron's Sophie's Choice. We saw the movie when it was released (why, yes, I am that old). It was one of the first movies my husband and I saw after we got married - nothing like a little dysfunctional love story to get you started off right! Of course, I had to rush out and get the book and read it as well. I don't keep many of the books I read, knowing I'm highly unlikely to ever find the time to re-read any of them with so many interesting books out there. But Sophie's Choice is one I did keep. It more than lived up to the movie - the splendid Southern feel of the narrative, the strong characters, the incredible emotional story. Have you ever read the book or seen the movie?
Speaking of Emily, anyone getting close to reaching the Emily level yet?

Please leave a comment with a link here for the books/movies you've completed in March. I read The Sun Also Rises this month and would love to see the Tyrone Power movie version but, like the Franco Zeferelli version of Romeo and Juliet that I wanted to rent, I can't find this one in the video store either. Anyone know a good online site (other than Netflix) for finding old movies?Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-51035836128837315982012-02-25T14:12:00.000-08:002012-02-25T14:12:34.544-08:00Please Leave A Link For Books Read In January and February Here

I don't know how to get rid of the Mr. Linky that I used two years ago so that I can start a new one and I think there are few enough of us to make leaving links in the comments work. Once we get through February, I'll post the links so that we can all see what the others have read so far for the challenge. I'm eager to hear how you're all doing! I tried to rent my favorite version of "Romeo & Juliet" last night but the store didn't have it. Going to have to check Hulu because I was really hoping to get a couple of items ticked off my list for this challenge this week. Have any of you seen the Franco Zefferelli version?
I'm grateful that my hubby minored in English in college and that we've moved all of the books he read many times so that I was able to find The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, a full collection of Charles Dickens' books, and Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I'm planning to read the Hemingway, the Twain, and at least one of the Dickens for this challenge plus I was also able to scrounge off of our shelves William Faulkner's The Sound And The Fury and Rebecca Wells' The Divine Secrets of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood. I'll possibly add a re-read of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca (now what shelf is that on?) and probably will read Michel Faber's The Crimson Petal and The White. Then I'm up in the air as to whether or not I'll do a couple of movies to round things out or do more reading.

When you sign up for challenges, do you make a plan at the beginning or do you wing it? If you've made a plan, what's on your agenda for this challenge this year?Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-87647814057098638222012-01-22T17:40:00.000-08:002012-01-22T17:40:00.769-08:00Better Late Than Never!A few weeks ago, I asked if any of you were interested in giving this Gilmore Girls Reading Challenge a try again. Thanks to those of you who responded that you'd would, I was convinced that a) I wasn't the only one who had a hard time getting to this one last year and b) I should run the challenge again. And then my gall bladder kicked up and I've been pretty much out of it for the past month. Argh! Still, I'm game if you are and we'll just run this challenge with a slightly different start date than planned.
We've had a situation in my household this year that meant that some things so had to be let go of and this, unfortunately was one of them. I thought very seriously of letting it go entirely but, having just looked at the list of books I have yet to read, I'm not sure I'm ready to do that just yet.

Let's try this again in 2012, shall we? If you're still interested, just leave a comment here so I know if it's worth the bother of giving it another go.Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-49926714627615280982011-01-19T14:26:00.000-08:002011-01-19T14:26:50.801-08:00Sign Up Form for 2011 Gilmore Girls Reading Challenge!Completely forgot to do this! If you were shooting for the Rory level, did you at least reach the 15 book level? How many of you reached 10 books?

If you even reached the Emily level, please let me know by Friday, January 14th and I'll get your name entered into the drawing for the year end prize! Even if you didn't reach the goal this year, are you going to join us again? I'm making the goals much easier for 2011 including the option of watching movie adaptations for some of your choices. I know I'm going to be taking advantage of that option! Maybe, I thought, that's just me because I'm having such a hard time reaching it. But when I asked for any of you who had reached 20 books to let me know, I only heard crickets chirping. Hooray, I'm not alone!

So my Christmas present to you is that the Rory level goal is now only 15 books. If you were shooting for the Rory level and you've gotten that far, give yourself a pat on the back!

Next year, we're starting off with more realistic goals!Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-29479402229087949292010-12-10T20:53:00.000-08:002010-12-10T20:53:28.506-08:00Anyone Going To Reach The Rory Level?

The more I think about it, the more I realize I was crazy to expect anyone to read 20 books for one challenge. So I'm wondering if any of you have actually done that? If any of you have, then we'll stick with it for this year. If not, then I'm going to make a change for this year which will maybe make it possible for more of us to reach that level.

If you've reached 20 books for the challenge for this year, will you please shoot me an email at litandlifeATgmailDOTcom?Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-35378803679174357622010-12-04T17:30:00.000-08:002010-12-04T17:30:46.827-08:00The End Is Near - Of This Year Anyway!

The girls are all dolled up - for the holidays, I'm sure! As we reach what seems to be the busiest time of the year, I've had to admit that I'm not going to read nearly all of the books that I had hoped to read for this challenge. I'm going to have to load up on easy reads to reach my goal of 20 books. Luckily, there are a lot of fairy tales on the list which fits right in with my new passion for them. But...I still want to read all of those other books I had hoped to read when I started the challenge.

So I've decided to host the challenge for another year. There will be a couple of changes regarding the number of books you need to read to reach each level.

Emily: Read a total of four books from at least two different categories.

Lorelei: Read a total of six books from at least three different categories.

Rory: Read a total of ten books from at least three different categories.

For the list of books, click here.

Here's another twist for this year: for the Emily level, you can substitute one movie adaptation of any book. For the Lorelei level, you can substitute two movies and for the Rory level you can substitute four movies.

Hope you'll all decide to continue with the challenge again next year!Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-27080399566064441132010-11-14T09:28:00.000-08:002010-11-14T09:28:32.215-08:00How's Everyone Doing?

With fewer than two months left in the challenge, I've got a couple of questions for everyone. How are you doing toward making your goal? And would you be interested in doing this again next year?

I'm having to make some drastic changes in my reading plans for the challenge. I had hoped to load on heavy with the classics for this challenge but that's clearly not going to happen. I've only read 7 books that qualify but I have nothing more I have to read for review for the rest of the year and will really concentrate on hitting my 20 for this challenge which was my goal. But...that means that there are a lot of great books on the list that I'm still wanting to read. So I'm pondering whether or not to continue the challenge for next year and need your feed back.

I know it's a busy time of year, but don't forget to make time to read. We all need that done time to balance out the chaos that is the holiday season!Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-21259119969489013382010-11-03T12:17:00.000-07:002010-11-03T12:17:40.922-07:00And The Winner Is....

The winner of an $80 gift certificate from CSN Stores is Kathmeista! I'm sure you've seen them around the blogosphere; they've been terrific about offering giveaways at many sites. In fact, I had never heard of CNS stores until the first time I say a review for one of their products on a blog. I'm always hesitant to order things online from a company I'm not familiar with but I've read nothing but great reviews about the CSN products and service.

When they approached me about doing a giveaway on one of my blogs, I decided that you, my fellow Gilmore Girls lovers, should have top shot at this for sticking with it. Here's the scoop: CSN Stores is actually over 200 stores that sell everything from bed sets to fire pits to school room furniture. I've got my eye on a new bookcase...or two. Or perhaps a nice big reading chair for my bedroom. The sites are easy to navigate and you can even get quotes.

To enter the giveaway, just leave me a comment with your email address. If you are participating in the challenge, please be sure to remind me to earn an extra chance to win! I will announce the winner on November 1st.
Theoretically, we should be through half of the books we planned to read - I'm 1/10th. I definitely took on too many books for review in May and that graduate in the picture? I had one of those at my house. Even though the party was planned for outdoors, this is Nebraska and anything can happen at any given hour, weatherwise, so the entire house had to be cleaned, top to bottom. Whew--very proud of the kid but just as happy as he was to be done hitting the books, I was anxious to start hitting the books!

Do you summer plans involve more reading or do you find yourself having less time to read in the summer?Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-1205853251079281922010-04-01T14:56:00.001-07:002010-04-01T15:06:00.878-07:00Three Months Down--How's Everybody Doing?Well this is embarrassing--we're a quarter of the way through the year, through the challenge, and I have yet to read a single book for it. I promised myself, back in December that I wasn't going to accept so many review books. But Trish and Lisa at TLC Book Tours keep dangling great books in front of my face like they're some drug I'm desperately addicted to (well, honestly, they are). And, I'm not reading nearly as much as I did last year and as I had anticipated reading this year. I may just have to read "Eloise" soon just to get something on the board!

How are you all doing? I'm enjoying reading your reviews and hope that everyone takes a minute to stop by and say hello when people post new reviews. I'm loving that Mr. Linky in the sidebar--I can see immediately when there's a new review. I have no idea how I got it to work like that so I will never be able to do it again. That's pretty much how most of the things I do on the computer work!

Just for fun, let's say that you're Rory and you're packing for a weekend trip. It's only two days, but you know that Rory would pack far more books than you could reasonably read in that time period. What's sitting in your TBR pile that you'd have to pack to take along?Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-64299796537126460692010-02-01T17:21:00.001-08:002010-02-01T17:28:35.494-08:00How's Everybody Doing?I see that some of you are really hitting the books--you must have been the "A" students! I'm still working on my first book; if I'm going to reach Rory level, I've got to get reading. There are as many movies referred to in The Gilmore Girls as there are books so the challenge is to fire up that DVD player, grab a cup of coffee (if you're like Sheila) or tea (if you're like me) , prop up your feet and feast your eyes on some of the great and not so great movies on the list. Anybody already reading? I started Charles Dickens' The Christmas Books in December by reading from A Christmas Carol to my family when we were snowed in on Christmas Eve but never got further than the first chapter. So, first up for me is to finish that book.

I'm still trying to work out how we'll post our reviews. For the time being, if you have a review to post, use the Mr. Linky at the bottom of the first post. Put your name and URL in the first box and the name of the book in the second box. I didn't even have time to do Christmas cards this year! We did read some of "A Christmas Carol" from it as a family on Christmas Eve. It's so much easier to get the family to sit and listen when the weather has made them a captive audience!

I've joined a number of challenges this year but I was only able to join so many of them because this one has such a wide variety of books available that can cross over into other challenges. If I pick my books right from this list, there are a couple of challenges I could finish without even picking up an extra book. I'm liking the idea of double pats on the back without twice the work!Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-74042496264806268872009-12-10T22:06:00.000-08:002009-12-10T22:09:42.929-08:00Starting DateSo the challenge officially begins January 1st. And I told you that if you are no more than half done by then you can count the book. But I really want to read A Christmas Carol this year. Before Christmas. And I want it to count for the challenge. So, since it's my challenge, I'm changing the rule!

The challenge officially starts January 1st. But if you want to get a head start, you can count anything that you're reading this month that's on the list. You just can't add the review until January 1st.

Now I just have to figure out when I'm going to work in another book before Christmas. Hmm...Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-88300469569253353522009-12-05T22:20:00.001-08:002009-12-05T22:21:27.817-08:00Crossing Over With Other ChallengesOkay, when I was watching The Gilmore Girls on the WB network, I knew Rory Gilmore was an avid reader surrounding by a smart mom and spent a lot of time in school. Stands to reason that there would be a lot of books around. But I had no idea how many that was until a friend guided me to a list of almost 300 books.

Now I know I'm slow getting this challenge up, but the good news about this challenge is that with this many books to choose from, it makes a great crossover challenge.

If you're reading the Women Unbound Challenge, you'll find on this list "The Second Sex" by Simone de Beauvoir, "A Room of One's Own" by Virginia Woolf, "Out of Africa" by Isak Dinesen and and "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath. For "Woolf In Winter" you could also add Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway. Crossing over with All About The Brontes, you could read "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte and "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte. The Shelf Discovery Challenge has crossovers with "Deenie" by Judy Blume and the Nancy Drew books by Carolyn Keene. If you're participating in the Really Old Classics Challenge, you can crossover "The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, "Bhagavad Gita," and "The Iliad" by Homer. Wow, I just figured out that I could sign up for about three more challenges!Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-662164559280523275.post-27189844154182751882009-12-05T10:00:00.000-08:002009-12-05T10:09:59.159-08:00Book Giveaway--"The Bell Jar"Jo-Jo of Jo-Jo loves to read!!! is hosting a giveaway for Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar." Since this is one of the books included on the Gilmore Girls list, I thought you might like a chance to win it if you were thinking about reading it.Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05554217416500328610noreply@blogger.com2
